The Ancient Time of the Archean
The Archean was an ancient time in Earth's history. It started about 4 billion years ago and lasted until about 2.5 billion years ago. This was a very old time, long before humans or even dinosaurs lived.
During the Archean, Earth looked very different from today. It was mostly covered by deep oceans, with only small bits of land peeking through. The air was filled with gases like methane and had almost no oxygen. The Sun was a bit dimmer, but Earth was still warm because of heat from inside the planet.
The most exciting thing about the Archean is that life first appeared here! Tiny, simple living things called microbes began to grow in the shallow waters. Some of these tiny organisms, called cyanobacteria, learned to use sunlight to make food. This changed Earth forever, slowly filling the air with oxygen.
Today, we can find very old rocks from the Archean in places like Greenland, Siberia, the Canadian Shield, and Australia. These rocks tell us stories about Earth's early days and how life began. The Archean was a special time when our planet started to change and prepare for the many forms of life we see today.
