Charles Babbage
Charles Babbage was a clever man from England. He loved solving problems and thinking up new ideas. People call him the "father of the computer" because he thought about machines that could do math very fast.
Babbage was born in London, maybe in 1791 or 1792. He grew up with three siblings. His father worked in banking. Charles went to school in Totnes and Enfield. Later, he studied at the University of Cambridge.
Babbage had many wonderful ideas. He made plans for a machine called the difference engine. This machine could calculate numbers without mistakes. He also designed another machine called the analytical engine. This one could do many kinds of math, just like computers today! He used ideas from the Jacquard loom to control his machine.
Even though Babbage’s machines were not fully built in his time, people remembered his smart ideas. In 1991, someone built a working model of his difference engine. It worked just like he planned!
Babbage loved sharing his ideas. He wrote books and talked with other scientists. He also held fun gatherings on Saturday nights in London. Many smart people came to talk and share ideas.
Today, we can see parts of Babbage’s machines in the Science Museum in London. His clever thinking helped start the story of computers.
