Meet the Cheetah

The cheetah is a beautiful, spotted cat that loves to run very fast. It is the fastest land animal, zooming at speeds up to 104 kilometers per hour (that’s like a car on the highway!). Cheetahs have soft, tawny fur with black spots that look like little stars.

Cheetahs live in warm places, mostly in Africa. You can find them running across open grasslands called savannahs, like the famous Serengeti. There is also a small group of cheetahs in central Iran. These cats enjoy places with lots of space to chase their food.

Cheetahs are social animals. The mothers and their babies stay together in small groups. The boys sometimes team up with their brothers. Cheetahs are most active during the day, unlike lions or hyenas who like the night. They hunt smaller animals like impala and Thomson's gazelles by running super fast.

Baby cheetahs, called cubs, are born with their eyes closed. They stay close to their mom for about a year and a half before they can live on their own. Cheetahs are special because each one has unique spots, like a human fingerprint.

People love cheetahs for their speed and beauty. Sadly, cheetahs face challenges because their homes are disappearing. Many people and groups work hard to protect these amazing animals. Places like the Cheetah Conservation Fund help cheetahs by studying them and teaching others how to care for them.

Cheetahs have been friends with humans for thousands of years. Ancient pictures of cheetahs have been found in places like Egypt, where they were special to kings and queens. Today, cheetahs can be seen in zoos all around the world, where they get special care to stay healthy and happy.
