What is a Clay Court?

A clay court is a special kind of tennis court used for playing tennis. It is made from crushed stone and a top layer of fine clay. The clay gives the court its unique red or green color.

Clay courts are very popular in Europe and Latin America. The most famous tournament played on clay is the French Open, one of the biggest tennis events in the world.

Why is Clay Special?

Clay courts behave differently from other tennis courts. The ball bounces higher and slower, which makes the game a bit slower too. Players often slide on their knees to reach the ball, which is fun to watch! The clay also helps keep the court dry during light rain.

Caring for Clay Courts

Clay courts need lots of care to stay in good shape. They are watered and rolled often to keep the surface smooth. Before and during matches, the court is brushed to make sure it is even. All this work helps make the court perfect for tennis players.

Fun Fact

One of the most successful clay court players is Rafael Nadal, known as β€œThe King of Clay.” He has won many titles on these special courts!
