What is a Salamander Congress?
A salamander congress is a special time when salamanders meet in vernal pools. These small, wet places fill with water in the spring, and they are perfect for salamanders. During this gathering, called a congress, salamanders come together to find mates and make new babies.
When and Why it Happens
Every spring, both male and female salamanders travel to the same vernal pools. The biggest night, called the Big Night, is when the most salamanders are there. This meeting helps the salamanders continue their families. The word "congressing" comes from a Latin word meaning to come together for a special purpose.
A Safe Place for New Life
The eggs that salamanders lay in these pools are safe because the pools dry up in the summer. This keeps other animals away, making it a good place for the eggs to grow. Some communities even build special amphibian and reptile tunnels to help salamanders cross roads safely. It is a beautiful part of spring that helps salamanders start new lives.
