What is a Cryoseism?

A cryoseism, also called an ice quake or frost quake, is a fun way nature shakes the ground when it gets very cold. It happens when water in the soil or rocks freezes quickly and makes everything expand. This can push and strain the ground, and sometimes the ground cracks suddenly, causing a little shake.

Where Do Cryoseisms Happen?

Cryoseisms usually happen in very cold places. You can find them in parts of Canada, like Ontario, Quebec, and near the Great Lakes. They also happen in the Midwestern, Northern, and Northeastern United States. Other cold places where cryoseisms occur include Alaska, Greenland, Iceland, and Finland.

Why Do People Know About Cryoseisms?

People know about cryoseisms because they can make the ground shake a little and sometimes make loud noises. Even though they can feel like small shakes, they are not the same as earthquakes. Scientists study them to help people build safer houses and buildings in cold areas. Learning about cryoseisms helps us understand how cold weather affects the ground.
