Meet the Cuttlefish
Cuttlefish are wonderful sea animals that love to play with colors! They are part of a special group called cephalopods, which also includes squid, octopuses, and nautiluses. These clever creatures have a special inside shell called a cuttlebone. This shell helps them move up and down in the water by changing how much they weigh.
Cuttlefish have big, W-shaped eyes and eight arms with two extra tentacles. These tentacles have tiny suckers that help them catch tasty treats like small fish, crabs, and shrimp. Most cuttlefish are about as long as your hand, but the giant cuttlefish can grow as big as a grown-up’s arm!
These sea friends are very smart. They have one of the biggest brains for their size of any animal without a backbone. Long ago, people liked the brown pigment that cuttlefish release when they feel scared. This pigment is called sepia, and it gives us the warm, reddish-brown color we call sepia today.
Cuttlefish love to change their skin colors. They can go from hiding like rocks to showing bright patterns in just one second! This helps them stay safe and also catch their food. Their ability to change so fast makes them one of the most fascinating sea creatures in the ocean.
