What Is a Decimal Representation?

A decimal representation is a fun way to write numbers using digits from 0 to 9 and a special symbol called the decimal separator. This symbol helps us show parts of a number that are smaller than one. For example, in the number 123.45, the part before the separator is 123, and the part after is 45. The part after the separator tells us how many tenths, hundredths, or even smaller pieces there are.

Why Do We Use Decimals?

Decimal representations help us understand numbers in many places, like when we measure distances or count money. They let us express numbers very precisely. For example, we can write numbers that are not whole, like half or a quarter, easily with decimals. This makes math and everyday tasks simpler and clearer.

Interesting Facts About Decimals

Some numbers can be written in two different decimal ways. For example, 0.999... (with endless 9s) is the same as 1.000... (with endless 0s). Decimals can also go on forever in a repeating pattern, like one-third, which is 0.333... where the 3 repeats forever. These special numbers help us see how math can be both tricky and amazing!
