Division is one of the four main ways we work with numbers in math. The others are addition, subtraction, and multiplication. Division helps us share things equally or find out how many times one number fits into another.

Imagine you have 20 apples and want to share them with 4 friends. Division tells us each friend gets 5 apples. We write this as 20 ÷ 4 = 5. In this example, 20 is the number being shared, 4 is the number of friends, and 5 is how many apples each friend gets.

There are special names for parts of a division problem. The number being divided is called the dividend. The number we divide by is the divisor. And the answer we get is called the quotient.

Sometimes, numbers don’t divide evenly. For example, if you divide 21 apples among 4 friends, each friend gets 5 apples, and there is 1 apple left over. This extra apple is called a remainder. We can share it by cutting it into pieces so everyone gets a little more.

One important rule in division is that we cannot divide by zero. This is because zero times any number is always zero, and division by zero does not give a clear answer. Most calculators will show an error if you try this.

Division is useful in many places, like sharing snacks, cutting a pizza, or figuring out how many eggs fit in a basket. It is a fun way to work with numbers and solve everyday problems.
