Meet the Donkey

Donkeys are friendly, strong animals that have helped people for thousands of years. They look like small horses but have big ears and a special cross shape on their backs. Donkeys come from Africa and were first tamed there a very long time ago.

Today, donkeys live in many places, especially in underdeveloped countries. They help people carry heavy things or pull things in fields. This work is called being a draught or pack animal. In some places, donkeys are kept as pets and loved by families.

Male donkeys are called jacks and female donkeys are called jennies. When a jack and a horse have a baby, it is called a mule. Donkeys are very loyal and make great friends for people all over the world.
