Endoplasmic reticulum

Diagram showing the structure of the endoplasmic reticulum, an important part of cells.

The endoplasmic reticulum is a very important part of cells. It helps make and move things inside cells. It is like tiny bags and tubes inside each cell.

There are two kinds of endoplasmic reticulum. One is called the rough endoplasmic reticulum. It has tiny parts on it that help build proteins. The other is called the smooth endoplasmic reticulum. It helps make fats and other important things.

The endoplasmic reticulum looks like a little net inside cells. It was first seen a long time ago by scientists using special tools. It is found in most cells but not in some, like red blood cells.

This important part of the cell helps make sure proteins are shaped right and sent to where they need to go. It is like a delivery system inside every cell.
