What Is a Fecal Sac?

A fecal sac is a special little bag that some baby birds, called nestlings, make around their waste. It is usually white or clear with a darker end, like a tiny envelope. This helps parent birds keep the nest clean and tidy.

How It Helps Birds

When a nestling eats food, it quickly makes a fecal sac. Parent birds can easily pick up these sacs and carry them far away from the nest. This keeps the nest healthy and makes it harder for animals that might hurt the babies to find it.

Learning From Fecal Sacs

Scientists also find fecal sacs interesting. By looking at them, they can learn what the baby birds have been eating and if anything harmful is around. When they see a parent bird carrying a fecal sac, they know that the birds are taking care of their young. This helps them count how many birds are in an area during special counting projects called bird censuses.
