Meet the Hamster!

Hamsters are tiny, friendly animals that many people keep as pets. They are part of a group called rodents and love to collect things. The most common pet hamster is called the golden or Syrian hamster. But there are also other fun kinds, like Campbell's dwarf hamster, the winter white dwarf hamster, the Roborovski hamster, and the Chinese hamster.

What Do Hamsters Like?

Hamsters enjoy eating seeds, fruits, and plants. They also munch on insects sometimes. These little creatures are most active during twilight—the time just before sunset or after sunrise. As pets, they love to play and eat at night.

Special Features

Hamsters have special things that make them interesting! They have long cheek pouches that can stretch all the way to their shoulders. They use these pouches to carry food back to their cozy burrows or underground homes. Their fur-covered feet help them move easily, and their short tails give them balance.

Why Do We Know About Them?

Hamsters became popular pets a long time ago. The Syrian hamster, also called the golden hamster, was first described by a scientist in 1839. In 1939, people learned how to keep them as pets. All Syrian hamsters today come from one brother and sister caught in Syria in 1930. They were taken to Jerusalem and had many babies. Some went to the United States and became loved pets and helpers for scientists.

Hamsters are wonderful little friends that bring joy to many homes. They are easy to care for and love to play, making them perfect for young animal lovers.
