What Was the Houston Tower?

The Houston Tower was a very big idea for a super tall building in Houston. An architect named Robert B. Sobel thought of building a tower that would be 500 stories high! That would make it one of the tallest buildings ever imagined.

Who Came Up With the Idea?

Robert B. Sobel worked with an engineer named Nat W. Krahl from Rice University. They wanted to use special triangular tubes that were 200 feet on each side to build the tower. Their idea showed that it might have been possible to build such a huge building.

Why Do We Remember It?

Even though the Houston Tower was never built, it is still remembered. It was planned to cover 16 city blocks, an area of 250 by 250 feet. The design looked a bit like the Sears Tower, but much, much bigger. The Houston Tower remains one of the tallest buildings ever fully planned.
