Hydric brooding
Adapted from Wikipedia ยท Explorer experience
Some frogs have a very special way to take care of their eggs. This is called hydric brooding. It helps keep the eggs wet and safe.
Frog eggs are different from bird or reptile eggs because they do not have a hard shell. If they dry out, the baby frogs inside cannot grow. That is why hydric brooding is so important.
In hydric brooding, male frogs help their eggs stay moist. They can put liquid from their bladder on the eggs. For example, the Phyllobates vittatus, also called the male poison arrow frog, sits on its eggs. He releases liquid to keep them wet and checks on them often. He does this until the eggs are ready to hatch.
This shows how nature has amazing ways to help animals protect their young. Hydric brooding is one of these clever strategies.
