Understanding LGBTQ People
LGBTQ people are individuals who see themselves in special ways. Some may call themselves lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. Others might use words like queer, questioning, intersex, asexual, aromantic, or agender. All these ways of seeing yourself are natural and normal.
Many LGBTQ people live happy lives and help make the world better. They are artists, scientists, teachers, and friends. Being LGBTQ is not a choice—it is just one part of who a person is. Learning about these different identities helps us all be kinder and more welcoming.
LGBTQ people often join together in communities. These groups give support and share fun traditions, like pride parades. In some cities, like New York City, special places like the Stonewall Inn remind us of how important it is to stand up for fairness.
Every person, no matter how they see themselves, deserves to be treated with respect. By learning about LGBTQ people, we help create a world where everyone feels safe and valued.
