What Is a Lake Breakout?
A lake breakout is when a lake suddenly collapses and a lot of water rushes out very fast. This usually happens to lakes that are high up in the mountains. These lakes might sit in special places like volcanic craters or valleys blocked by old glaciers. When a lake breaks out, it can cause big changes in the nearby land.
Why Do Lake Breakouts Happen?
Lake breakouts can happen after big natural events, like a volcanic eruption. The ground can shake from earthquakes, or the sides of the lake can wear away because of erosion. When the walls of the lake break, water flows out quickly. This fast-moving water can carry a lot of sediment, making the area look very different.
Famous Lake Breakouts
One of the biggest lake breakouts happened a very long time ago with a lake called Lake Bonneville. This huge lake was filled with water from the last ice age and covered parts of Utah, Idaho, and Nevada. When it broke, it changed the shape of the land, including the Snake River. Scientists also think that something like this might have happened on Mars, creating some of its famous canyons.
