What Is Language?
Language is a special way that people share ideas, feelings, and thoughts. We use language to talk, sign, or write. Every language has its own words and rules, but they all help us tell stories, ask questions, and connect with each other.
People all around the world speak thousands of different languages. Some languages are spoken, like English or Spanish. Others are signed, like American Sign Language. Languages can even be written in special ways, such as braille.
How Do We Learn Language?
All children learn to use language naturally. Even babies start making sounds and gestures very early. By the time they are a few years old, they can speak or sign many words and sentences. Learning a new language is possible at any age, and many people speak more than one language.
Why Is Language Important?
Language helps us share what we need, how we feel, and what we see in the world. It lets us talk about things far away, tell stories from long ago, and make new friends. Languages also change and grow over time, and some people work hard to keep all languages alive.
Languages come in families, like the Indo-European languages, which include French and Russian. Other big families are the Sino-Tibetan languages, such as Mandarin Chinese. There are many smaller languages, too, especially in places like Papua New Guinea and West Africa.
