What is Laornis?

Laornis is an ancient type of bird that lived a very long time ago. We only know about it because scientists found one special bone. This bone is called a tibiotarsus, which is a part of a bird's leg.

Where Did We Find It?

The bone was found in New Jersey in the United States. It came from old rocks that are about 66–63 million years old. These rocks help scientists know how old the bird was when it lived.

What Was Laornis Like?

From the shape of the bone, scientists think Laornis had long legs and was about the size of a big goose. It might have lived near water, like a wading bird. Some think it could have stood about one meter tall!

A Name with a Story

The name Laornis means “stone bird.” It comes from Ancient Greek words. One part, lao, means “stone,” and the other, ornis, means “bird.” The species name edvardsianus honors a scientist named Alphonse Milne-Edwards, who studied ancient life.
