Lava caves are special places made by volcanoes. They form when hot, melted rock called lava flows and creates tunnels inside the Earth. These caves show us how powerful nature can be and help scientists learn about our planet's history.

Lava tubes are the most common type of lava cave. They look like long, smooth tunnels. When lava flows, the outside hardens first, but the hot lava inside keeps moving, making these tunnels. The shape of the land and how thick the lava is decide how the tunnels form.

There are also smaller caves called surface tubes. These are tiny channels made when fast-moving lava runs over hardened surfaces. They help the bigger lava tubes grow longer.

In places like Iceland, we can find open vertical conduits. These are deep, round holes that lava used to flow through. Some of them are very deep and have little rock points hanging from the walls.

Lava caves are found all around the world. One famous place to see them is Lava Beds National Monument in California, United States. Exploring these caves lets us see amazing shapes and learn about the Earth’s powerful forces.
