What Is a Lava Tree Mold?

A lava tree mold is a special shape made by hot lava around a tree trunk. Imagine a forest where the ground starts to move with hot, flowing lava. When lava moves slowly over trees, it can wrap around them like a cozy hug. As the lava cools, it turns into a hard shell, keeping the shape of the tree.

How Does It Form?

Inside the hard lava shell, the tree burns away, leaving an empty space. This space shows us what the tree looked like before the lava came. If the tree stood up tall, the mold might look like a thin tube. If the tree fell down, the mold might look like a long cylinder on the ground.

Why Do We Study Them?

People love to study lava tree molds because they tell a story from the past. Scientists and visitors look at these shapes to learn about old volcanoes and what forests were like long ago. These molds show us how nature can make very interesting and unusual shapes.
