Amazing Butterflies and Moths
Lepidoptera are beautiful insects that include butterflies and moths. They have colorful wings with tiny scales that make them look bright and special. You can find them almost everywhere except Antarctica, in places like forests, gardens, and mountains.
These insects have a special way of growing called complete metamorphosis. They start as tiny eggs, then become caterpillars. Caterpillars love to eat leaves and grow quickly. Next, they turn into a pupa. Butterflies become a hard shell called a chrysalis, while many moths spin a cozy silk cocoon. Inside, they change into beautiful adults with wings.
Butterflies and moths are important for plants. The adults drink sweet nectar from flowers using a long, coiled tube called a proboscis. When they visit flowers, they help plants make new seeds by carrying pollen from one flower to another.
People have loved these insects for thousands of years. In many cultures, butterflies are seen as symbols of love and new beginnings. Some moths, like the silkworm, are special because they make silk that is used to make clothes. You can see butterflies and moths in many gardens, and they make the world around us more colorful and fun!
