Map showing the voyages of explorer Matthew Flinders around Australia

Captain Matthew Flinders

Captain Matthew Flinders was a brave sailor and explorer from England. He loved to travel and discover new places. One of his biggest adventures was sailing all around Australia. Back then, Australia was called New Holland, but Flinders thought "Australia" was a better name for the whole land.

Flinders grew up in a small village called Donington, Lincolnshire. As a boy, he read stories about adventures far away, which made him want to go to sea. At just fifteen, he joined the Royal Navy, the navy of Britain. He worked on many ships and learned how to navigate and map new lands.

Flinders made many important discoveries. He sailed with a friend named George Bass and showed that Tasmania, which was called Van Diemen's Land, was an island separate from Australia. He also sailed all around Australia on a ship called HMS Investigator. Along the way, he named many places and made detailed maps. He was the first person to use the name “Australia” for the whole continent, and today we still use that name.

During one of his trips, Flinders stopped at an island ruled by France. Because Britain and France were not friends at the time, the French leader did not trust him. Flinders had to stay there for many years, but he kept writing about his adventures. Finally, he was allowed to return to Britain.

Flinders passed away in London at the age of forty. For many years, people forgot where he was buried. But in 2019, workers found his grave while building a train station. In 2024, his remains were brought back to his hometown of Donington, Lincolnshire for a special ceremony.

Many places are named after Flinders today, like Flinders Island and the Flinders Ranges. His maps and stories helped people learn about Australia and remain important even now.
