What is Methane?
Methane is a special kind of gas made from one tiny piece called a carbon atom and four hydrogen atoms. You can think of it like a little pyramid shape! It is the main part of natural gas, which people use to heat homes and cook food. Methane is a clear gas that you can't see or smell, but we add a special smell to it so we can know if there is a leak.
Why Do We Care About Methane?
Methane is important because it helps keep our planet warm. It acts like a cozy blanket around the Earth by trapping heat. But, if there is too much methane, the Earth can get too warm. That's why many people are working to use less methane and keep our air clean.
Methane in Space
Methane isn't just here on Earth! Scientists have found methane on other planets, like Mars. They also found it on Titan, one of Saturn's moons, where it rains methane instead of water! Finding methane in space helps scientists learn if life might exist somewhere else.
Fun Facts About Methane
Methane can be turned into a liquid and moved in special ships called LNG ships. It can also be used in rockets to help them fly! Even though methane can be dangerous if it builds up, engineers work very hard to keep everyone safe.
