What Is a Near-Earth Supernova?

A near-Earth supernova is a big, bright light show from space. It happens when a star ends its life in a huge explosion. If this explosion happens close to our Earth, it can change the sky for a short time.

These explosions are very rare, but scientists think they have happened many times in the past. Some stars that might explode someday are not too far from us. Learning about them helps us understand how stars live and change over time.

Stars That Might Explode

There are about a dozen stars that could one day become near-Earth supernovae. One famous star is Betelgeuse, which is in the night sky right now. It is very big and bright, but it would take many years before it might explode.

Here are some stars that might explode in the far future:

Old Supernovae Near Us

Long ago, a supernova may have helped create our Solar System. Scientists have found clues in rocks on Earth that show these explosions happened close by in the past.

One old supernova happened about 4.5 billion years ago. It may have sent special material into space that helped make the Earth and life possible. These events are part of the big story of how our universe grows and changes.
