What is the Paibian?

The Paibian is a special time in Earth's long history. It is a part of the Cambrian Period, when the first complex animals began to swim in the oceans. This time helps scientists study rocks and fossils to learn about ancient life.

Where Did the Name Come From?

The name Paibian comes from a village called Paibi in Hunan, China. Near this village, in the Wuling Mountains, scientists found a special spot that marks the start of the Paibian time. This spot shows a tiny sea creature called Glyptagnostus reticulatus, which helps them know when they are looking at rocks from this time.

Learning About Ancient Seas

By looking at fossils from the Paibian, scientists discover what life was like in the oceans millions of years ago. Small sea creatures, such as Homagnostus, Pseudagnostus, and Acmarhachis, are found in these rocks. These fossils tell stories about the ancient sea and the animals that lived there.
