What is Paper?
Paper is a thin sheet made from tangled plant fibers. It is used for many things, like writing, drawing, and wrapping gifts. Most paper comes from wood, but it can also be made from old clothes or plants.
A Long History
People first started making paper in East Asia a very long time ago. A man named Cai Lun helped make paper better. Before paper, people used things like leaves and stone to write on. Now, we have many kinds of paper, thanks to new ways of making it.
How Paper is Made
To make paper, people start with something called pulp. Pulp is made from fibers, which can come from wood, old rags, or special plants like paper mulberry. The pulp is spread out very thin and then dried to make paper. This process can give paper different feels and looks.
Fun Uses of Paper
Paper is very useful! Artists use special paper to paint beautiful pictures. We also use paper for money, books, and even toilet tissue. Paper comes in many thicknesses — from very thin tissue paper to thick card stock for crafts. No matter where you look, paper is everywhere!
