Poseidon

Poseidon was a very important god in ancient Greece. He was the god of the sea, storms, earthquakes, and horses. People who sailed on the ocean asked Poseidon to keep them safe. Many coastal cities built special places to honor him.

Poseidon was one of the twelve Olympians, the main gods in Greek stories. He had a brother named Zeus, who ruled the sky, and another brother named Hades, who ruled the place under the earth. Together, they divided the world. Poseidon chose the sea!

In pictures, Poseidon often holds a special three-pronged fish spear called a trident. He sometimes rides in a chariot pulled by magical horses that can travel on water. People thought he lived in a beautiful palace under the ocean, made of shiny coral and bright gems.

Long ago, writers like Homer told stories about Poseidon. In the stories, he helped some people and made life hard for others, like Odysseus, who wanted to go home after a big adventure. Even today, Poseidon appears in books, movies, and video games. Kids love learning about him in stories like Percy Jackson & the Olympians!
