What Is a Pumice Raft?
A pumice raft is a big group of floating pumice. Pumice is a very light rock made when some submarine volcanoes or volcanoes near the coast erupt. Because it is light and full of tiny holes, it can stay on top of the water for a long time.
Why Do People Know About Pumice Rafts?
Pumice rafts are special because they can float very well. They often wash up on beaches, and people can see them from boats or even from space! Scientists think these floating rocks might have helped life start on Earth. They also believe animals and plants may have used these rafts to travel far away across the oceans.
Fun Places and Times
Big pumice rafts have been seen in many places. In 2006, people near Tonga saw bright, floating pumice and watched a new island form. In August 2012, a huge pumice raft was found near New Zealand, stretching for many miles. These floating rocks help us learn about our planet and how life moves around the world.
