What Is a Pyramid?
A pyramid is a special kind of building. It has triangular sides that meet at a point up top. The bottom, or base, can be any shape, like a triangle or a square. People have built pyramids for thousands of years in many places around the world.
Famous Pyramids
One of the most famous pyramids is the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt. It is very big and very old. People built it a long time ago, around 2600 BC. It was the tallest building in the world for many years. Another interesting pyramid is the Great Pyramid of Cholula in Mexico. It is the biggest pyramid by size, even though it looks smaller from the outside.
Where Are Pyramids Found?
Pyramids are found on many continents. In Africa, you can see pyramids in Egypt and Sudan. In Asia, there are pyramids in China and Indonesia. In Europe, there are small pyramid-like buildings in Greece and Poland. In the Americas, many cultures built pyramids, too. You can find them in Mexico, Peru, and even in the United States at places like Cahokia.
Why Do People Build Pyramids?
People built pyramids for many reasons. Some were used as tombs for important leaders. Others were temples for worshipping gods. The shape of a pyramid helps it stay strong and tall for a very long time. That is why so many pyramids are still standing today.
Modern Pyramids
People still love pyramids today. There are modern buildings shaped like pyramids all over the world. In France, the Louvre Pyramid is the entrance to a big museum. In Las Vegas, the Luxor Hotel looks like a pyramid. These buildings remind us of the amazing pyramids built long ago.
