Salientia: The Jumping Friends
Salientia is a special group of animals that includes frogs and toads, as well as some ancient "proto-frogs". The name Salientia comes from a Latin word meaning "to jump", because these animals are great at hopping and leaping. They are a type of amphibian, which means they often start life in water and then live on land.
The oldest fossil of a proto-frog was found in Madagascar from a time called the early Triassic. This helps scientists learn how frogs and toads have changed over millions of years. Some scientists even think that the ancestors of today’s frogs might have lived even earlier, way before the first dinosaurs!
Today, we see many kinds of frogs and toads all around the world. They live in forests, ponds, rivers, and even deserts. Their ability to jump helps them catch food, escape from danger, and move around easily. Frogs and toads are important for nature because they eat lots of insects and help keep the balance in their habitats.
