The Sea is a special part of the night sky filled with wonderful shapes that look like water animals and objects. Imagine looking up and seeing pictures of fish, whales, and rivers made of stars! This special area has only a few land pictures, maybe because the Sun hides behind clouds during this time of year.
Many years ago, a wise man named Ptolemy named these star pictures. Some of the most famous ones are Aquarius, who carries water; Capricornus, the sea-goat; and Cetus, the whale. You can also spot Delphinus, the dolphin, swimming through the stars, and Pisces, the beautiful fishes.
Other fun pictures in the sky near the Sea include Hydrus, a little water snake, Volans, a flying fish, and Dorado, a shiny swordfish. Looking at these star pictures can feel like watching a magical underwater world right above us!
