Singapore used to be called Temasek. A long time ago, a prince named Sang Nila Utama saw something that looked like a lion and named the place Singapura, which means "lion city." In 1819, a British leader named Stamford Raffles helped make Singapore a busy trading place for the British Empire. After a difficult time, Singapore became its own country in 1965.
