What is a Sopka?
A Sopka is a special kind of hill or mountain. They have soft, rounded tops and gentle slopes that look smooth from far away. Sopkas are found in many parts of Russia. You can see them in places like the Transbaikal region, the Kola Peninsula, and the Russian Far East.
Where Are Sopkas Found?
Sopkas grow in beautiful places such as the Kamchatka Peninsula and the Kuril Islands. Some of these Sopkas are volcanoes, but most are just hills that rise gently from the land. In other areas like Crimea and the Caucasus, some Sopkas are mud volcanoes. These push up mud and gas instead of lava.
Why Do We Know About Sopkas?
The word “Sopka” comes from an old Slavic word meaning “small hill.” These hills teach us how Earth’s surface changes slowly over time. They make the land look beautiful and interesting. Some famous Sopkas include Avachinskaya Sopka, Klyuchevskaya Sopka, Koryakskaya Sopka, and Nikolskaya Sopka.
