String Instruments
String instruments are special tools that make beautiful music. They use vibrating strings to create sounds. You can play these instruments in many ways, like plucking the strings with your fingers or rubbing them with a bow.
There are many kinds of string instruments. Some, like guitars, are played by plucking. Others, like violins, are played with a bow. In big music groups called orchestras, you can hear bowed string instruments such as violins, violas, cellos, and double basses. They are very important in Western classical music.
Other string instruments are mostly plucked. Examples include harps, electric basses, sitars, banjos, mandolins, ukuleles, and bouzoukis. All these instruments belong to a group called chordophones in the Hornbostel–Sachs system.
String instruments can also be played by striking the strings. The piano is a great example of this. It has many strings inside that vibrate when you press the keys.
String instruments have been around for a very long time. Old pictures and cave paintings show people playing instruments like musical bows. In Ancient Mesopotamian times, people made lyres, which are early versions of harps and other string instruments. Indian instruments from long ago had many strings, and a very old single-stringed instrument was found in Vietnam.
Today, string instruments are used in many types of music. Electric guitars are popular in rock and pop music. Violins and cellos are used in classical music and orchestras. No matter where you hear them, string instruments always bring beautiful sounds to our ears.
