What is a Subglacial Mound?
A subglacial mound is a special kind of volcano that forms under thick ice. Imagine hot lava trying to burst out, but it is trapped under a giant blanket of ice, like a glacier or an ice sheet. The heat makes special rocks deep below the surface.
Where Do We Find Them?
These amazing mountains are found in places that had lots of ice and also had volcanoes. You can see them in Iceland, Antarctica, and in the Canadian province of British Columbia.
A Special Example
One famous subglacial mound is Pyramid Mountain in the Wells Gray-Clearwater volcanic field. It looks like another type of volcano called a cinder cone, but it was formed under ice long ago.
