Torres Strait Islanders
The Torres Strait Islanders are one of the two main Indigenous groups of Australia, along with Aboriginal Australians. They come from the Torres Strait Islands, a group of islands between Australia and Papua New Guinea. These islands are part of the state of Queensland.
Torres Strait Islanders have their own special culture and traditions. They are known for their beautiful art, including sculpture, printmaking, and making masks. Their culture is very connected to the sea. They are skilled at fishing and often eat foods like dugong, turtles, and crayfish.
Many Torres Strait Islanders now live on the Australian mainland, but they still remember their island homes. There are five main groups of Torres Strait Islanders, each with their own language and customs. Two big languages are Kalaw Lagaw Ya and Meriam Mir.
The people of the Torres Strait Islands have special stories about the sea and the stars. They also celebrate "The Coming of the Light" each year on July 1, remembering when Christianity came to their islands. Even today, many Torres Strait Islanders follow Christian faiths while keeping their old traditions.
Torres Strait Islanders have made a mark in many areas. Eddie Koiki Mabo helped fight for land rights, Christine Anu is a famous singer, and Patty Mills is a well-known basketball player. Their rich culture and history make the Torres Strait Islanders an important part of Australia's story.
