Trilobites: Ancient Sea Friends
Trilobites were tiny sea creatures that lived millions and millions of years ago. They had hard shells that helped keep them safe, and their shells turned into fossils. Because of these fossils, we can learn about them today!
These interesting little animals came in many shapes and sizes. Some moved along the ocean floor, while others swam in the water. They liked to eat tiny plants and animals called plankton.
Trilobites first appeared about 521 million years ago during a time called the Cambrian period. They lived in oceans all around the world for nearly 270 million years. Their fossils help us learn about how life on Earth has changed over time.
Trilobites belonged to a group called Artiopoda. They had hard shells made of calcite. Scientists think they might have been close to horseshoe crabs or even insects.
You can find trilobite fossils in many places around the world. In the United States, a great place to see them is in Hamburg, New York, at Penn Dixie Fossil Park & Nature Reserve. In the United Kingdom, Wren's Nest in Dudley is famous for its trilobites. Other important locations include British Columbia in Canada, China, Germany, and Morocco.
Scientists love studying trilobites because they help us understand how life changes over time. Some U.S. states, like Ohio, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania, even chose trilobites as their official state fossils!
