What is Volcano Boarding?

Volcano boarding is a fun and exciting way to slide down the sides of a volcano. People use a thin board, like a small snowboard, to go very fast down the slope. It is also called volcano surfing because it feels a bit like surfing, but on land instead of water.

Where Do People Do It?

One of the most popular places for volcano boarding is Cerro Negro near the city of Leon in Nicaragua. Riders hike up the volcano and then slide down, sitting or standing. They can go as fast as a bicycle! Other places where people enjoy this sport include Mount Fuji in Japan and Mount Etna in Italy.

How Did It Start?

Volcano boarding was started by an explorer named Zoltan Istvan in 2002 on Mount Yasur in Vanuatu. He thought of sliding down both active and quiet volcanoes. Today, many people can join tours to try volcano boarding safely.

Staying Safe

When volcano boarding, riders wear special gear to stay safe. This includes a jumpsuit, goggles to protect their eyes, and gloves for their hands. The boards have extra material at the bottom to help them slide smoothly over the rough ground.
