The World Trade Center
The World Trade Center was a special group of tall buildings in New York City. It was built in the Financial District of Lower Manhattan. The two tallest buildings were called the Twin Towers. When they were built, they were the tallest buildings in the whole world!
People from all over came to work and visit the World Trade Center. It had many offices, restaurants, and even special viewing decks where you could see all of New York City. The World Trade Center was also a symbol of the United States’s strength and busy life.
Long ago, the land where the World Trade Center stood was part of the Hudson River. Dutch explorer Adriaen Block’s ship, Tyger, burned there in 1613. Later, the area was called Radio Row, with many fun electronics stores.
In 1974, a famous tightrope walker named Philippe Petit walked between the Twin Towers. It was very exciting, and he did it without permission!
Today, a new World Trade Center stands in the same place. It has new tall buildings, a peaceful park, and a special memorial to remember those who were lost. The new buildings are just as amazing as the old ones.
