What Is a Yolk Plug?

A yolk plug is a special group of cells that helps some animals grow from tiny eggs. It is found in animals like frogs, toads, and salamanders. These animals are called amphibians.

How It Helps

The yolk plug looks like a little patch on the surface of the early embryo. It is made from endodermal cells. These cells help shape the embryo as it grows. The yolk plug moves inward in a process called epiboly. This helps the embryo develop healthily.

Why It Is Important

Learning about the yolk plug helps scientists understand how many living things grow. It is one of the steps that happens when an embryo forms a structure called the dorsal lip of the blastopore. This important part of growth makes sure the embryo grows just right.
