Angular frequency

In physics, angular frequency (symbol ω) is a way to measure how fast something moves in a circular path or how quickly a wave changes. It tells us how fast an angle changes, like in swings, sound waves, or light waves. This idea is important when studying movements that repeat and waves.

Angular frequency is related to regular frequency, but it uses angles measured in radians instead of full cycles. You can find angular frequency by multiplying the regular frequency by 2π, because one full turn equals 2π radians. This gives the formula ω = 2π rad⋅ν, where ν is the rotational frequency.

It can also be described as the instantaneous rate of change of angular displacement with time, written as ω = d_θ_/d_t_. This means it shows exactly how fast the angle θ is changing at any moment. Angular frequency helps scientists and engineers understand many natural things, from the swing of a pendulum to the vibrations of atoms.

Unit

In SI units, angular frequency is measured in radian per second. Hertz (Hz) is a similar unit, but it is used for regular frequency, not angular frequency. This helps keep things clear when working with different kinds of measurements.

In digital signal processing, frequency can sometimes be changed by the sampling rate to create what is called the normalized frequency.

Angular frequency helps us understand motion in circles and back-and-forth movements. In circular motion, the angular frequency tells us how fast something moves around a circle. It connects how fast the object moves, how far it is from the center, and how long it takes to finish one full circle.

We also see angular frequency in springs and electrical circuits. For a spring, the angular frequency depends on how stiff the spring is and how heavy the object is. In electrical circuits with capacitors and inductors, the angular frequency relates to how quickly the circuit can vibrate.

Terminology

Angular frequency is sometimes called just "frequency," but it is actually different. It is larger by a factor of 2π. This means it measures angles instead of simple counts. This difference can cause confusion, so it is important to explain it clearly.
