Architecture is the study and practice of designing buildings where people can live or work. It mixes civil engineering with art, making it both a science and a visual art. Architects follow many steps to build a structure, like drawing ideas, planning layouts, designing details, and constructing the building. Buildings are not just places to stay; they often show a culture’s values and are seen as works of art.

In adding the dome to the Florence Cathedral (Italy) in the early 15th century, the architect Filippo Brunelleschi not only transformed the building and the city, but also the role and status of the architect.

The practice of architecture began in the prehistoric era, with each civilization using buildings to show their culture around the world on all seven continents. One of the oldest books about architecture is De architectura by the Roman architect Vitruvius. It said a good building should be strong, useful, and beautiful. Later thinkers like Leon Battista Alberti and Louis Sullivan added new ideas, such as the phrase "form follows function". Today, sustainable architecture is also very important.

Architecture began with simple buildings in the countryside that were copied when they worked well. Over time, ancient cities built big temples and palaces. Later periods like the Middle Ages made lovely Romanesque and Gothic cathedrals. The Renaissance brought back classic styles. After World War I, modern architecture used new materials and shapes. Today, architecture includes tall skyscrapers, ship design, and interior decorating.

Definitions

Architecture is the design and building of structures like homes and public places. It is both an art and a science. Architects plan where people live, work, and meet. They think about what a building needs to do, how to keep people safe, and how it should look. Their work can be as small as a piece of furniture or as big as a whole city.

Architecture also talks about the style and way buildings are made. It uses ideas from art, science, technology, and what people need. Architects create plans for everything from cities to the details of a building.

Theory

Main articles: Architectural theory and Philosophy of architecture

The philosophy of architecture studies the beauty and meaning of buildings and how they relate to culture. Many thinkers, from Plato to Ludwig Wittgenstein, have thought about what makes architecture special.

The oldest book about architecture is De architectura by the Roman writer Vitruvius. He said a good building should be strong, useful, and beautiful. Later writers like Leon Battista Alberti looked at balance and harmony in design. Today, architects think about how buildings should look, work, and help the environment. One famous idea is that "Form follows function," meaning a building’s shape should match its purpose. Modern architects also care about using materials and energy wisely to protect the planet.

History

Main article: History of architecture

Buildings started as simple shelters to keep people safe and comfortable. As communities grew, buildings became more complex, using local materials and skills. Over time, building became a valued craft, and different cultures created their own styles.

Ancient places like Egypt and Mesopotamia built big structures to show strength or honor the divine. Later, Greek and Roman architecture focused on community ideas, making designs that lasted. Asian architecture, such as in India, China, and Japan, developed special styles shaped by their surroundings and beliefs.

Today, architecture mixes beauty with usefulness, using new technology to make spaces that are good for the planet and comfortable for people everywhere.

Types

Architecture has many types, each with its own purpose. Residential architecture designs homes for families and individuals. Commercial architecture builds places for businesses, governments, and religious groups. Industrial architecture creates buildings for factories and warehouses, keeping them safe for workers and goods.

Landscape architecture designs parks and gardens to be both beautiful and useful. Urban design plans how cities and towns look, designing streets and neighborhoods. Green design builds in ways that help the environment, using natural materials and saving energy. Other types include naval architecture, which designs ships, and many modern fields that use “architecture” to organize ideas and systems.
