Balabac Island is the southernmost island in the province of Palawan, and it is the westernmost undisputed island in the Philippines. It lies about 50 km (31 mi) north of Sabah, Malaysia, separated by the Balabac Strait. This makes it an important place for both the Philippines and Malaysia because of its spot near their shared water border.
The island is part of the municipality of Balabac, which includes 14 barangays, with six more barangays on nearby smaller islands. Balabac Island has a rich natural home and is known for its beautiful beaches and sea life, drawing visitors who enjoy fishing, diving, and exploring its special nature.
Because of its location, Balabac Island is part of talks about water borders and sharing resources between the Philippines and Malaysia. The people who live there have created a life that mixes fishing, small farming, and welcoming tourists, making it an interesting place to learn about island towns and their links to countries close by.
Geography
Balabac Island is home to many special animals, including the Philippine mouse-deer. It has been named an Important Bird Area because many rare birds live there, such as grey imperial-pigeons, Palawan scops-owls, and Palawan hornbills.
The island is mainly inhabited by the Molbogs, a Muslim group. They work as farmers and fishers and trade goods with nearby places like Mapun and Sabah.
Historical and strategic context
Balabac Island is next to the West Philippine Sea, which is part of the South China Sea. Some countries, like the Philippines, mainland China, the Republic of China (Taiwan), Vietnam, Malaysia, and Brunei, disagree about who owns this area.
The island is close to Mischief Reef, called Panganiban Reef in the Philippines. In 1995, China built a big artificial island there.
Balabac has Naval Station Narciso Del Rosario, which belongs to the Philippine Navy. It also has a military runway. This runway will be used by the United States Military under something called the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement. The runway helps both military and civilian airplanes.
