Chickadees are small, friendly birds found across North America. They belong to the family Paridae and the genus Poecile. These birds are known for their special calls, which often sound like βchick-a-dee-dee-dee.β They use these calls to warn of danger. Chickadees are usually between 6 to 14 centimeters (2.4 to 5.5 inches) long. They have a darker crown and throat patch compared to the rest of their bodies.
The black-capped chickadee (Poecile atricapillus) is important because it is the official bird of Massachusetts and New Brunswick. It is also the official bird of the cities of Calgary, Regina, and Saskatchewan. In Maine, a chickadee is the state bird, but no specific type has been chosen.
In other parts of the world, some birds that look like chickadees are called tits. One common species found in both North America and Eurasia is known as the grey-headed chickadee in North America and the Siberian tit in Eurasia. Chickadees are popular among birdwatchers because of their cute look and special calls.
Habitat
Chickadees live in North America, from the East Coast to the West Coast, and from Canada to Mexico. You can find them in many places, like forests, parks, open woods, and areas where people have changed the land. These birds are very common.
Memory
Mountain chickadees hide food to eat later in winter. One bird can hide up to 80,000 seeds. They remember where they hide the seeds using their spatial memory. Birds that live in tougher places, where remembering food spots is very important, have better memory, a bigger hippocampus, and more neurons than birds in easier places.

Some well-known kinds include the Black-capped chickadee, Boreal chickadee, Carolina chickadee, Chestnut-backed chickadee, Grey-headed chickadee, Mexican chickadee, and Mountain chickadee. Each of these birds looks a little different, but they are all small and have special markings on their heads.
