Detoxification, often called "detox," is the way the body gets rid of harmful or toxic substances. This happens mostly in the liver, where special proteins help break down and remove toxins. It can also mean the body healing after stopping the use of addictive substances, helping it return to balance, known as homeostasis.
In medical situations, detoxification can be helped with methods like cleaning the body after poisoning, using special medicines called antidotes, and using techniques such as dialysis or, in some cases, chelation therapy. The body’s kidneys and liver are naturally good at detoxification, with certain proteins inside cells, like CYP enzymes, playing an important role. When these organs are not working well, treatments like dialysis or organ transplants can help.
Some people try special diets or programs called detoxification diets, promoted by practitioners of alternative medicine. However, studies show that many of these diet-based "detox" claims do not have strong scientific support. Learning how the body naturally detoxifies itself is important for staying healthy.
Types
The body has natural ways to remove harmful substances, a process called detoxification. For example, when someone stops drinking alcohol after a long period, their body needs to adjust and return to normal. This is called alcohol detoxification and can be dangerous without medical help. Similarly, drug detoxification helps people manage withdrawal symptoms when they stop using drugs, but it is just the first step in treating addiction.
Animals, including humans, also have a way to handle harmful substances made during normal body processes. Through special chemical reactions and the work of enzymes, these substances are made less harmful and then removed from the body. This natural process is part of how our bodies stay healthy.

Alternative medicine
Some people use special treatments from alternative medicine to try to remove substances they call “toxins” from the body. These treatments include things like herbal drinks, special showers, or special pads. However, these ideas are not proven by science. Our liver and kidneys naturally clean our body, so there is little proof that these “toxins” build up in the way these treatments suggest. Some of these methods can be unsafe.
