Finger numbering

In English, talking about the "first finger" can be confusing. There are two ways people number their fingers. Depending on the situation, the word "first" might mean either the thumb or the index finger. This means that when we talk about the "second," "third," and "fourth" fingers, it also depends on which numbering system we are using.

However, there is no confusion when we talk about the "fifth finger." This term always refers to the pinky, also known as the little finger. That's because the term "fifth finger" is only used in the five-finger system, where the fingers are counted from the thumb to the pinky. This system makes it clear and easy to understand which finger we are talking about.

Finger numbering systems

The numbers for the fingers on your hand can be confusing because English has two ways to name them. The word “first finger” can mean either the thumb or the index finger, depending on what you are talking about.

In the five-finger system, the thumb is called the first finger. People often use this system in doctors’ offices or when playing instruments like the piano. In this system, the index finger is the second finger, the middle finger is the third, the ring finger is the fourth, and the pinky is the fifth.

In the four-finger system, the index finger is called the first finger. This is how most people talk in everyday English and when playing instruments like guitars, flutes, or horns. In this system, the middle finger is the second, the ring finger is the third, and the pinky is the fourth finger.
