Dian Fossey, an occupational therapist, was inspired by anthropologist Louis Leakey to study primates, especially the rare mountain gorillas in Africa. With Leakey’s support, she went to the Congo to study them. She later moved her work to Rwanda.
Fossey’s work drew attention, including from National Geographic, which sent photographer Bob Campbell to document her efforts. Her work to stop poaching and protect the gorillas made her many enemies. Sadly, Fossey’s work ended when she was killed in 1985. Her efforts helped protect gorillas from extinction.

Critical response

Some people thought the film could have told more about the real life of Dian Fossey. They liked the gorilla scenes and thought Weaver was a good choice for the role, but they wished the story had shown more about who Fossey really was.
