Hans Ehard (10 November 1887 – 18 October 1980) was a German lawyer and politician. He was a member of the Christian Social Union (CSU) party.

Ehard played an important role in the government of Bavaria after World War II. He served as the Minister President of Bavaria, leading the state during its recovery and rebuilding years. His work helped shape the political landscape of Germany during a time of change.

Hans Ehard was born in Bamberg in 1887. He studied law in Munich and Würzburg. Later, he became a public prosecutor. In 1924, he was the main prosecutor of Hitler and Ludendorff after they tried to change the government of Bavaria in 1923.

After World War II, Ehard became the first elected Minister President of Bavaria in 1946. He served again from 1960 to 1962. Then he became Justice Minister until 1966. Ehard also worked for the environment and charity. He was President of the Schutzgemeinschaft Deutscher Wald and the Bavarian Red Cross. He died in Munich in 1980.

Post-War career

Hans Ehard had many important jobs in Germany after World War II. He was the Bavarian Minister of Justice in 1945. Later, he served as the Bavarian Minister-President from 1946 to 1954 and again from 1960 to 1962. He was also the Chairman of the Christian Social Union (CSU) party from 1949 to 1955 and the President of the Bavarian Landtag from 1954 to 1960.

Honours and awards

Hans Ehard received many important awards during his life. In 1953, he was given the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. He also received the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 1956 and the Grand Decoration of Honour in Silver with Sash of the Decoration of Honour for Services to the Republic of Austria in 1957. He was awarded the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St. Gregory the Great in 1961 and the Grand Officer of the Legion of Honour from France in 1962. In 1962, he became an Honorary Member of the Academy of Fine Arts, Nuremberg. He also received the Bayerische Verfassungsmedaille in Gold.
