IAU designated constellations by solid angle

The International Astronomical Union (IAU) officially recognizes 88 constellations of stars. These constellations help us organize and understand the night sky. They are ranked by the solid angle they cover, measured in square degrees and millisteradians. This ranking shows which constellations look larger or smaller when we gaze at the stars.

The borders between these constellations were set in 1930 by astronomer Eugène Delporte, who worked for the IAU. Before this, there were no agreed-upon boundaries, which made studying the sky tricky. Delporte drew the lines along right ascension and declination, which are like imaginary grid lines in space.

Because Earth’s axis slowly wobbles over time—a process called precession—the borders Delporte created for the epoch B1875.0 look slightly tilted on modern star maps, such as those for J2000. However, the size, or solid angle, of each constellation stays the same, no matter how the borders appear to shift over time.
